Overview

Supports the development of new concepts for next-generation research infrastructures of European interest, including major upgrades or extensions of existing infrastructures. Targets consortia planning transformative, sustainable, and scientifically advanced facilities across all research fields.

Who Can Apply

Consortia of legal entities (e.g., universities, research organizations, public bodies, private companies) from eligible countries. The Joint Research Centre (JRC) may participate as a beneficiary with zero funding or as an associated partner.

What Is Funded

• Concept development for new, upgraded, or extended research infrastructures of European interest.
• Feasibility studies, science cases, and design planning for transformative infrastructures.
• Assessment of technical and operational viability, including governance, financial planning, and sustainability.
• Integration of environmental impact reduction and resource optimization.
• Development of user communities, service planning, and data management (FAIR principles).
• Synergies with existing infrastructures and alignment with EU strategic agendas (e.g., European Partnerships).

• Proposals must demonstrate uniqueness, added value for the European Research Area (ERA), and alignment with the ESFRI landscape.
• Routine maintenance, incremental upgrades, or standalone components of existing infrastructures are not eligible.
• Ethical dimensions and environmental considerations must be integrated where relevant.
• Gender dimension inclusion is optional.
